He recounts being solicited by his publisher to write a historical novel about former United States president Thomas Jefferson. He also discusses the nature of historical fiction writing and discusses the work of writers such as Kenneth Roberts and William Styron. Max Byrd is a professor emeritus of English at the University of California, Davis and the author of historical novels.
