25 Years Later: Can HIV Be Cured?
Stevenson, Mario
Scientific American, November 2008, v299, #5, pp78-83
This article discusses the development of a cure for HIV as well as drug therapies for HIV, noting the success of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in fighting the symptoms of the virus. The therapy's inability to cure HIV is discussed, mentioning that the virus is able to return in full strength if HAART treatment is interrupted or discontinued.
Mario Stevenson is David Freelander Professor of AIDS Research in the Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
