A Plan to Defeat Neglected Tropical Diseases
Hotez, Peter Jay
Scientific American, January 2010, v302, #1, pp90-96
"The article discusses neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). According to the
author, the poorest people suffer from chronic illness making it difficult for
them to escape poverty. An example is given of the Burkina Faso program in West
Africa which treats millions of children suffering from preventable diseases
such as parasitic cysticercosis. An in-depth discussion on what is being done to
defeat NTDs, such as drug distribution and education, and those most affected is
presented."
Peter Jay Hotez chairs the department of microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine at George Washington University.
