The Color of Care
Williams-Mbengue, Nina; Christian, Steve
State Legislatures, April 2007, v33 # 4, pp30-33
The article focuses on the impact of race on child welfare systems in the U.S. It notes that the overrepresentation of minority children in the child welfare system is a result of poverty and its related social problems rather than racial issues. It mentions that minority families tend to be given fewer and lower quality services. Suggestions for enhanced child welfare programs include hiring of more diverse staff, promotion of family group conferencing and cultural differences staff training. Nina Williams-Mbengue and Steve Christian handle child welfare issues at the National Conference of State legislatures.
