| Still Waiting After All These
Years: An In-Depth Analysis of FOIA performance from 1998-2006
The Coalition of Journalists for Open Government, August 8,
2007, online edition
According to this analysis, “the self-reported performance
of federal departments and agencies in responding to Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) requests continues to deteriorate, despite
a public nudge from the president, in a December 2005 executive
order, to improve service. The Coalition findings provide a stark
contrast to the rosy report the Justice Department sent to President
Bush in early June advising that the response by government agencies
to his presidential order was encouraging. How could the two sets
of findings be so different? Justice focused on how agencies had
progressed toward self-established bureaucratic goals. The Coalition
analyzed the delivery of the requested information to the public.”
