| State Pensions or Charity
Hamilton, Alice
Atlantic Monthly, October 2007, v300, #3, pp61-62
The article is a reprint of a column by Alice Hamilton, the first female faculty member of Harvard Medical School. The column first appeared in May 1930. She argues for state-provided old-age pensions in favor of private charity. She is especially concerned about older workers whose jobs are supplanted by technology. A country as rich as the U.S., she argues, should be able to provide for those who are no longer able to work.
