Mining for Votes
Kriz,Margaret
National Journal, February 16, 2008, v40, #7; pp53-55
"Congress is making a serious attempt to overhaul the 1872 Mining Act, an archaic law that allows mining companies to extract billions of dollars worth of gold, uranium, and other minerals from federal lands without owing U.S. taxpayers a penny in royalties." With demographics and politics changing the formerly recalcitrant West, Congress is working on updating the 1872 Mining Act. Margaret Kriz covers energy and environmental issues for the National Journal.
