| The Recently Arrived Foreign Born in the United States
Batalova, Jeanne; Terrazas, Aaron Matteo
Migration Policy Institute, May 2007, online edition
This article describes the characteristics of recently arrived immigrants to the United States looking at the countries of origin, education levels, occupations, and other characteristics of newer immigrants. For example, of the 35.7 million foreign born living in the United States in 2005, over half arrived in 1990 or later. The five largest foreign-born populations in the United States in 2005 were from Mexico, the Philippines, China and Hong Kong, India, and Vietnam. Of the recently arrived foreign born age 25 and
older, 29% had a bachelor's degree or higher; and 15% had completed
some college; 23 % had a high school diploma or equivalent; and 33% had less than a high school
education. Younger immigrants were more than three times likely than older immigrants to speak English "very well" or better. Jeanne Batalova and Aaron Matteo Terrazas are both affiliated with the Migration Policy Institute.
